"Not THAT bad...could've been a lot worse..." (Average)

Things are downright spooky at multiplexes these days. You’ve got the Richard Gere thriller The Mothman Prophecies, Britney Spears’ attempt at acting—no, my mistake, sorry. I meant to say the new Kevin Costner flick Dragonfly.While Gere’s film is more terrifying than eerie, Dragonfly exists at the other end of the spectrum; it’s a film that would make a great double bill with The Sixth Sense. This is not to say that Dragonfly is devoid of shocking surprises, quite the contrary, but that this film is more of a meditation on the afterlife. Directed by Tom Shadyac (yes, he’s the one responsible for Patch Adams) Dragonfly begs the following question: when someone you love dies, are they gone forever? As head of the ER for Chicago Memorial Hospital, Dr. Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner) is a respected expert in trauma and triage. But his professional knowledge provides little comfort when tragedy claims the life of his wife. A doctor herself, Emily Darrow (Susanna Thompson) dies on a medical mercy mission in a bus accident on a remote mountain road in Venezuela. While attempting to deal with his profound loss, Joe discovers that reminders of Emily are everywhere, among them images of dragonflies, her personal totem because of a birthmark on her shoulder. And then there are Emily’s former patients in the pediatric oncology ward. Joe promised to look in on them when Emily left for Venezuela, and now finds that they offer a surprising link to her. To the kids, Darrow is not a burnt out ER doctor, but rather “Emily’s Joe.” And as some of these young patients survive near-death experiences, Joe begins to believe that Emily is trying to communicate with him – from the other side. While Joe’s co-workers (Joe Morton, Ron Rifkin) and friends (Kathy Bates, Linda Hunt) worry about his mental stability, Joe comes to realize that he must draw on faith – rather than fact – for answers to his questions. Amazingly, for all the things Dragonfly could have done wrong, it simply doesn’t. This film isn’t an amazing, earth-shattering cinematic masterpiece but it is a well-told and well-acted story. After watching this flick, I think perhaps there is hope for Kevin Costner after all. Shadyac’s direction belies the fact that he helmed both Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and the loathed Patch Adams. He doesn’t push the story into the maudlin, tear-jerking direction it could have gone; rather, he lets the scenes play out and lets his excellent cast do their thing. Speaking of the cast, the actors supporting Costner are quite good. Bates, always a delight, shines as Joe’s next-door neighbor, Miriam. Hunt also shines as a nun who comes to Joe’s assistance.Great for a date or if you just want to feel chills down your spine, Dragonfly offers up a thought-provoking tale helped by strong performances and proficient direction.
