"The last film that you could think of to be entertaining" (Worth A Look)

Well, now here’s a surprise. A completely misogynistic, brutal, action packed film that somehow mysteriously works, at least for me. As far as my share of guilty pleasures goes, this one is amongst the top of the list. It’s really a fun ride if you can dig it, and it contains some of the best action scenes and some of the funniest one-liners ever. If you’re a fan of action and escapist entertainment, you may want to take a stab at this one.So the film is about a disgraced fuck called Joe Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis trying to redeem himself from Hudson Hawk hell), a once famous body guard whom saved President Carter’s life, and now private eye after getting fired after a scuffle with his client, Senator Calvin Baynard (Chelcie Ross). He gets a surveillance job via his friend Mike Mathews (Bruce McGill) to watch over a stripper Cory (Halle Berry). After Cory and Mike get killed, Cory’s boyfriend Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayans) whom is an ex-football player kicked out due to gambling and drugs, decides to team with Hallenbeck to try and solve the case, that is, before they don’t kill each other first, while Hallenbeck’s wife Sarah (Chelsea Field) and his 13 year old spoiled brat daughter Darian (Danielle Harris) weave their way through. In the end, the apparent murder becomes more and more entangled into corruptive politics involving the sport of football and the loss of interest that’s amassing slowly, and that also involves the aforementioned Baynard and team owner Sheldon Marcone (Noble Willingham), and his sidekick Milo (Taylor Negron). I don’t blame people for hating this film, since it’s obviously 100% formula, it’s nasty, and treats women like shit. You got a 13 year old spoiled brat that talks a lot of shit and more than what an average brat should (many people got put off at that), an unfaithful wife (somewhat expected), and also a red-hot stripped whom wears tight pants and gets her clothes off whenever she has the chance (though no flesh is shown, but comes from the soon-to-be and so-called “hottest chick on the planet”). Though some nastiness is welcome, too much may seriously undermine the film’s credibility, and it got really close sometimes (for some, it went over). But it all just worked out for me; sure, I was aware of the film’s intentions of another revision at the “buddies that won’t get along at first” formula. But it worked, and what worked for it, was pretty much, the action scenes which kicked ass, the excessive violence which was also cool (but maybe too much for some, once again threatening the films thin credibility), and last but not least, Shane Black’s and Greg Hick’s screenplay that is filled with more memorable and more quotable one-liner’s since the days of Casablanca (ok, not that far, but you get the point). I must admit that the story’s premise on the corruption of football and the legalizing of gambling is a very weird one and I wonder if it would make for an interesting storyline for viewers to sit through. The whole thing tends to be a little iffy and turns into by-the-numbers predictability since it now involves the saving of an important person’s life. This maybe a grindstone for people that are looking for a better storyline, and a bit more of intelligence; but for the people that are looking for fast-paced action, it’s simply just another plot device, but it can all be saved by the fast-paced action and funny one-liners. It’s a film that you got to allow a certain amount of suspension of disbelief to actually like, and thankfully, the film is saved (depending on your point of view), by never actually going to extremes, especially in certain crucial scenes. I mean this film was THIS close to pretty much turn into a camp fest of shit-ass proportions. We got to give a little bit of credit to Tony Scott, not for the film in itself but for the spectacular staging of the action scenes which are one the most mind-blowing I’ve seen in a while. The cinematography by Ward Russell is quite impressive in these action scenes though sometimes his odd shots and weird hand-held camera angle’s through out the film may be somewhat annoying. The cast is on autopilot but Bruce Willis actually is perfectly cast in the role of Joe Hallenbeck and he gives out a very redeemable performance after the camp crap-fest of Hudson Hawk. Wayans also turns out a quite funny role as Jimmy Dix though I must say that he at times wants to be taken seriously in the role, typical of Wayans when he was trying to do action back in the day, he never could get it right, that’s why in the end, he stuck to comedy. Danielle Harris and especially Taylor Negron chew up the scenery at times, and they were quite interesting to watch, especially Negron after falls into the rotor blades of a police helicopter. WHOOPS! The rest of the cast were alright.In the end, if you’re looking for an intelligent complex film, this movie is not for you. If you’re looking for fast-paced action, guns and explosions, or simply pure escapist entertainment this movie is for you. For me, this film is just simply fun every time I see it on TV or rent it, it has been ever since the first time I watched it when I was 12 years old. One of the many guilty pleasures out there that people love that won’t admit it in public. Rent this one for a change brainy, and get your ass blown off. 3.5-5
